What to expect at your first physical therapy appointment

If you have never been to physical therapy, not knowing what to expect can be the very thing that stops you from booking. So here is the whole first visit, step by step — no surprises, no jargon.

Before you arrive

We verify your insurance ahead of time so there are no surprises at the front desk. In New York you can often begin physical therapy without a referral, though some insurance plans require one for coverage — we sort that out for you before your visit so it is already handled.

What to wear

Comfortable, loose-fitting clothes you can move in. If your issue is in your knee or leg, bring or wear shorts; if it is in your shoulder or neck, a tank top makes the assessment easier. You do not need anything special.

The evaluation

Your first visit is one-on-one with me — not handed off to an aide. We start by talking: how the pain began, what it feels like, what makes it better or worse, and what you are hoping to get back to. Then comes a hands-on physical assessment of your movement, strength, and mobility.

The goal of that assessment is to find the real source of the problem, which is often not where you feel the pain. (Pain down your leg, for example, frequently starts in your back.) Pinpointing the source is what lets us build a plan that actually addresses it.

Your plan

You leave with a clear, measurable plan and milestones — not a guess. Each treatment session runs about 45 to 60 minutes, one-on-one, and you will get a text reminder before every appointment so nothing slips through the cracks. We re-check your progress against those milestones as we go and adjust the plan based on how you actually respond.

You do not need to wait

A lot of people put off PT because they think their pain “isn’t bad enough yet.” If pain is limiting how you move, sleep, work, or get through your day, that is reason enough. We treat backs, necks, shoulders, knees, and more — browse the full list of conditions and services we treat — and no referral is needed to get started.
